Backyard starts the cd off with three slow grooves, “Point of It All,” “Alright,” and “Golden Point of Day”. All three songs satisfy the R&B fans with three mellow songs to ease you into the crank that’s coming. Whenever I play gogo for someone from outside of the DMV, the first thing they usually mention about gogo is the vocal talent of the singers. Backyard’s singers would definitely meet their standards on this CD. Also, as with all music recorded live this is much better without the synthesizers and autotune…
If you haven’t heard Ledisi’s “Alright” from Track #2 check it out. I heard that song as well as Frankie Beverly & Maze’s “Golden Time of Day” for the first time after listening to this CD. Both have been added to my iPod’s playlist. “Golden Time of Day” will definitely get played at my cookouts next summer. I’m starting to understand why its a big deal whenever Frankie Beverly and Maze perform in the DMV. I remember thinking as a child why Ma$e (from Bad Boy) was performing with some guy named Frankie Beverly…
Next, Backyard speeds it up a little with their rendition of “So Ambitious.” If go-go was to ever make it this is the first song I’d want to hear them play. Also pay attention their version of the lyrics to the chorus…
BYB also covers “Make Her Say/Pokerface.” Although I like their version, if I had to pick, I’d go with Raw Image’s version from their Reunion album. Side note: Kanye kills his verse on the original version…Common too…
Backyard also hit my friend’s favorite song which she calls, “My T-Shirt and Panties On.” Its been a while, but I believe it was originally “Thong Song.” Regardless, it still cranks…
This a good CD for fans of Backyard’s slower grooves and newer songs. It’s been in heavy rotation in my car and iPod.
