Wale Hosts The Capitol City Music Tour at PURE Lounge by Byron Hughey

MCs and vocalists from across the DMV packed PURE Lounge last night armed with bricks of demos and mixtapes, all hoping to win an opening spot at the 9:30 Club for special guest host Wale.
With Picasso live-painting in the background and a trumpeter laying down tasteful melodies over swooning vocalists, the beginning to last night’s open mic was a scene reminiscent of Ellington’s U Street. But, as soon as the Largo, Murrland MC stepped in the building, this scene was quickly eclipsed by the glow of tweeting cell phones, booming bass, and spontaneous cyphers.
As Capitol City Music Tour headliners K-Beta and Uptown XO provided electric performances, those wondering who will grace the stage at the 9:30 Club might want to check Wale’s Twitter. Here’s one of Wale’s tweets from late last night:
“lotts talent in DC!!! fat trell.and black cobain..something about their music..stay tuned”
For anyone interested in DMV Hip-Hop, you should definitely roll to an open mic. Not only do you get to see amazing performances from local artists, you get to meet tons of genuinely amazing people. And last night, if you were lucky, you got to meet some of the ladies from BeTaRaZ Entertainment’s 2010 DMV Divas Swimsuit Lingerie Calendar.

One significant moment I forgot to mention was when A&Rs from 93.9 WKYS encouraged artists to SUBMIT MIXTAPES. The KYS rep mentioned rather suggestively that “people” are taking notice.

Why does @theparkwaykiddc Muggsy Malone get no play in the DMV? He is 20 times better than any major artist I ever heard lyricially and musically. Word on the street is TPK crushed that cypher and wasnt even slated to be on it. He’s what the DMV needs.

I LOVE what Wale is doing…just because he made it, he hasn’t turned his back on the area…best described as “lifting as we climb”. Really wonder how many of these artists looking to get “put on” actually bought this guys album..its fire.

@cokokane I feel you on that Muggsy Malone tip. For some reason he hasn’t rised to the level of some of these other artists in the area in terms of popularity and fame, but he is clearly one of the better emcees and lyricist.
His delivery is great, his overall ability is damn near unmatched when it comes to DMV artists. once that TPK mixtape drops maybe then he will start getting more love out here…
