There are few words that can describe the feeling you get when listening to a genre as innovative and unique as hip-hop. From the slow and smooth molasses-like sounds of the south to the gritty, head-bobbing beats made famous on the east coast. There is no limit to the style and creativity a song can possess. Its transition has been continuous, satisfying the musical taste of almost every listener. Although the day has not come where I hear a female’s name thrown in when Biggie, Jay-Z, and Tupac are mentioned, I eagerly await knowing that the day will come sooner than later. This industry is hard enough as it is but extra hard for my ladies. They often are overlooked because people think females can’t put words together as well as males. My advice to those that have that state of mind is WAKE UP! Listening to Lola Maxwell has confirmed that for me. However, I can’t say the hip-hop industry isn’t trying with new female artists like Nikki Minaj, but she does not do it for me (lyrics are made by Mattel Go Barbie!! LOL).
Lola’s latest latest mix tape “From the Planet of the Greats” has stayed in my iPod’s top rated play list (not just any one enters this list) along with other artistic females such as Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, because her rap is exquisite. The mixtape features samples from songs we all know and love like Talib Kweli & Hi Tek’s “The Blast”.
As the New Year approaches I wanted to get the scoop on what we can expect from Lola in 2010, I had the opportunity to catch up with her last night, and asked what plans and endeavors she had for the New Year.
“[The] DMV can be expecting a lot from me in the upcoming year, 2010 is big! Its been a decade since the new millennium so big things will surely come of it. I am currently working on another mix tape entitled “Basik Edukation” that is slated to drop in February. I have not set a date, yet. It will probably be early February, around Valentine’s day. I have a big show coming up in January associated with the Adidas 3 Stripe Campaign”
This event is entitled “More Than-a-Dream” and will be held at the Adidas store in Georgetown, on 01-17-09, which also happens to be Miss Lola’s 21st B-day. Be sure to come out and support her and this event. You can even squeeze some shopping in! the store is having a special 30% off on all purchases (not too shabby).
Lola Maxwell:
“So, I would say 2010 would be starting pretty well! I see that I am getting more recognition so that is always good. Hopefully, I’ll be doing some more shows in the DC area. All I can pretty much say is for everybody to expect ‘Lola Maxwell’ to become a household name and a well known brand in the near future!! I’m talking bigger than Barbie, haha.”
Lola is an inspiring, driven and ambitious individual with an unparalleled sense of style that is definitely not afraid of risks, keep an eye out for her in 2010 not just musically but other aspects of the arts as well…..Please don’t sleep!!! Over and OUT!

Women get a bad rap in the hip hop world because of the bias and sexism toward the negativity of the female creative genious.. Erika badu and Lauren hill are 2 of the most influential women liricists who uge and promote change and a new outlook on the female hip hop industry. Having new women emerge in a strictly male dominated culture gives presidented hope for a new era generation, and decade that envokes a change from the norm and new era of hip hop clture… Thanks for the insight Ma :)… Keep the beat flowing!!
