10 successful underground mixtapes, and a library of well over hundreds of songs, Colo Bondz is sure to take the DMV by storm. Originally from New York by way of Nigeria, this rapper now dubs the DMV as his own. He has been thought of as an, “Original performer with unlimited style and creativity and ability to catch ears and bop heads in different parts of the world,” according to his biography. Colo Bondz has been through numerous life tribulations, including suffering from a car accident and deemed not being able to walk, but his passion and love for the music has allowed him to press on and preserver. His song structure and delivery are sick, his lyrics are sick and if you deem to disagree you must be listening to someone else. Colo Bondz submitted a Q&A exclusively for DMVSavvy.

Question: Where are you from? Nationality?

Colo Bondz: I am originally from Nigeria, Raised in New York, have lived in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and now reside in Washington, D.C.

Q: What mixtapes, solo albums, EP releases, have you had in the past? How long have you been doing music?

Bondz: I would say I’ve doing music overall including writing, rapping and producing for over 13 years.  I have worked [on and] released many mixtapes during this time namely.

  1. Nuclear War – (2003)
  2. Platinum Classic – (2003)
  3. Gimmie the Stonez – (2004)
  4. V.S.O.P. – (2004)
  5. The Chronicles of Colo Bondz – (2005)
  6. I Am What It Is – (2006)
  7. Day-n-the Life CD/DVD combo – (2007)
  8. Now or Never – (2009)
  9. Live Today Forever – (2009)

Q: Many young artists in the area are complaining about DJs not playing their music. Do you think DJs in the area are playing their role in breaking new music of young area artists in the clubs and on radio?

Bondz: I honestly believe after my conversation with some area DJs that this is not very true.  A lot of DJs are willing to play your music if it is really hot and you are willing to be patient and work on your relationship with them individually.  I honestly think it is a relationship game where you have to play your cards right and be respectful of their roles and jobs. No DJ wants to get fired playing something that’s not HOT in a club or not allowed by their superiors on the radio stations.

Q: Who are your favorite DJs in the area and why are they your favorite DJs?

Bondz: First of all, a special shout out to every DJ in the area. Some artists in the area really don’t know how hard these guys work and what they put on the line when they’re on their radio sets and spinning in the clubs.  I appreciate and would like to meet all of them or as many as possible from the Big named DJs to the younger DJs spinning in smaller lounges.  They are all important.  Shout out to DJ Soundwave for playing my music first in Ultrabar night clubDJ Sixth Sense for a lot of insight of what goes on behind the scenes, and for spinning my record Make It Hot which is currently getting some air play in New York.  I would like to have better relationships with DJ QuickSilva, DJ Trini, DJ Alizay, DJ Reddz, DJ Heat, shout out to DJ Dino for playing my music in Club 24, shout out to DJ Pootie as well as every other DJ out there working hard.  I just believe a good relationship with the DJs is what a lot of artists need and that’s just what I am trying to build right now.

Q: What’s your favorite radio station in the area?

Bondz: It’s funny because I listen to them all while I drive around.  Even Hot 99.5! Yes HOT 99.5! WPGC 95.5 and WKYS 93.9, obviously.  I like driving home at night from the studio listening to WHUR 96.3.

Q: Why do you prefer to be referred to as a “global artist” as opposed to a “DMV artist?”

Bondz: As an artist I believe that you have to strive to reach beyond a particular crowd or demographic and so that’s what I do, but directly to answer your question I think that the music we make is universal and transcends all genders and generational gaps.

Q: Any new records or singles out right now that you’ll like to plug?

Bondz: My new record “Make it Hot” has been picking up some steam, I saw that you actually posted it on your site about a week ago good looking on that, but yeah I got a new EP coming soon (no date yet) and umm…a few other leaks out there on the internet, “Baby” is one.

Q: I can see that from your work track record you are very involved in charities with a special interest in HIV and AIDS, tell me where this initiative was inspired from? And what organizations are you currently involved with?

Bondz: Currently I am working with a couple organizations like Pastiche Group LLC and “Don’t Guess, Get Tested” initiatives.  I am using my music and life experiences as tools to accomplish this challenging feat.  I plan to assist with “Feed the Hunger” programs and my management is currently contacting “Bread for the City” in Washington DC to see how I could help out with the Hunger crisis within the less privileged in the region.

Q: What artists’ would you most like to work with?

Bondz: Rich Girl is stirring up a great sound nationally right now I think they’re very beautiful and really wish them the very best because it’s been a while since a new girl group from the area singing that well….umm, Tabi Bonney, and other artists that are open minded and creative can definitely hit me up, this is what I do, I make good music and I also appreciate good music.

Q: Any shout outs?

Bondz: Thanks to DMVSavvy for taking interest in my music and other initiatives, I really appreciate that, Thanks to my family and friends, thanks to the Colo music project staff and a special thanks all DMV DJ’s supporting the movement, till next time Peace…
