‘In the Church.’ That’s where Alison Carney got her start in music, with most of her encouragement coming from her grandmother. She often sung in her church choir, perfecting her voice at an early age. A DMV native Carney is a very talented songstress. Her bubbly personality exudes through her performance. You can see that she puts every bit of herself into every song she writes.
Carney even got the opportunity to travel to China to perform, and it was an “awesome experience…traveling and touring is something I love to do.” She had a chance to perform with several well know artists including Raheem Devaughn, Dwele, and Slum village but her most memorable experience was performing a tribute to record producer J Dilla, and when Ma Dukes , Dilla’s mother, gave her “the stamp of approval [she]felt like yeah that is it.”
DC has been very receptive to her music, “they are really warm to me now.” One of DC’s most talented singers Wayna was quoted in DCist saying “‘I’m keeping my eye on Alison Carney. Her voice is crazy, and she’s going to make some big waves.” For Carey that is “very flattering to hear another artist recognize me….it humbles me” For Alison, “the gift of song of song was given to her” She prides herself on being able to sing whatever she wants and wants to “step away from other peoples idea of [her]” She doesn’t believe in boundaries and walls, which allows her to sing how she feels and often wishes that she was compared to someone because it “would help me see what kind of style I have.”
You can tell that her music is one hundred percent her. It often seems like her songs are a direct reflection of her life when you hear the passion in her voice. The inspiration for the song “You Said” was from a “college boy friend…you know young love,” she said with a smile on her face. The majority of her songs are love songs, and have a definitive “baby making” quality to them, especially the aforementioned “You Said”. However, there is one song that is very inspirational, “More Than Amazing.” Often male artist are singing songs dedicated to women and women sing about the heart ache that a man has caused them, this song is an ode to all men appreciating them for the good qualities they posses, a little reminiscent of Angie Stone’s “Brotha.” It’s certainly an uplifting song.
Carney wants to eventually reach the masses in a positive way with her music and “staying true to her” is something she is unwilling to sacrifice; and you have to respect her for that. Until the day she makes it big she’s “she’s taking it one day at a time.” She has an album dropping early this spring which will undoubtedly be a great start this singer’s career. She has an incredible voice and the beauty to match, inside and out. So stay tuned, I know I will.
